OVHC for Visitor visa 600 and parents: the complete guide
Parents visiting on a subclass 600 visa represent the highest-risk group in the OVHC landscape. Older age, pre-existing conditions, and longer stays combine to make insurance both essential and more complex. This guide covers what you need to know.
Does a 600 visa require OVHC?
Not all 600 visas carry condition 8501. Check your grant letter. However, even if condition 8501 isn’t attached, bringing a parent to Australia without health cover is financially dangerous. A single hospital admission for an older adult without insurance can exceed $50,000.
Most families buying OVHC for visiting parents do so voluntarily — and it’s the right call.
Pre-existing conditions: the biggest challenge
All OVHC insurers apply a 12-month waiting period for pre-existing conditions. This means:
- If your parent has diabetes, heart disease, or any condition they’ve had symptoms or treatment for in the 6 months before buying the policy, it won’t be covered for the first 12 months
- After 12 months of continuous cover, pre-existing conditions become covered
- Some insurers are stricter than others in defining “pre-existing” — Allianz and Bupa tend to have the clearest definitions
Insurer recommendations for older visitors
- Allianz Comprehensive: Top tier · Best reputation for handling age-related claims, clear pre-existing condition definitions
- Bupa Comprehensive: Top tier · Widest hospital network, good extras for physio/optical that older visitors actually use
- Medibank Comprehensive: Top tier · Strong hospital cover, extras including psychology
Budget tiers are less suitable for older visitors — public hospital shared wards, limited GP access, and no extras for physio (which many older visitors need).
RHCA countries and visitor cover
If your parent is from an RHCA country (UK, Ireland, NZ, Italy, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland, Norway, Belgium, Slovenia, Malta), they can enrol in Medicare for medically necessary treatment. But:
- RHCA Medicare only covers treatment that can’t wait until you return home
- It does not cover ambulance, dental, optical, physio, or prescriptions
- It does not cover elective surgery
Most families from RHCA countries still buy budget OVHC for ambulance and extras, even if they rely on RHCA Medicare for hospital cover.

FAQ
Can I buy insurance for my parents from overseas? Yes — most OVHC insurers accept purchases from overseas. You need your parent’s passport details and intended arrival date.
What if my parent has a health emergency on arrival? If the condition is new (not pre-existing), it’s covered immediately. Ambulance is covered from day one on all OVHC policies. Emergency department treatment at public hospitals is also covered.
Can I cancel if they return home early? Yes — most insurers offer pro-rata refunds for unused months. A cancellation fee (~$50) may apply.
