OVHC for Visitor visa (subclass 600) holders
The subclass 600 Visitor visa covers a wide range of situations — from a two-week holiday to a 12-month stay with family. If your visa carries condition 8501, you need OVHC. For parents visiting from overseas, getting the right cover means navigating age-based premiums and pre-existing condition waiting periods.
Does condition 8501 apply to your 600 visa?
Not all 600 visas carry condition 8501, but most long-stay visitor visas do — especially 12-month family-sponsored visits. The only way to know is to check your visa grant letter. If condition 8501 is listed, you must hold OVHC from a registered Australian insurer for your entire stay. There are no exceptions and no workarounds.
Special considerations for older visitors
If you're arranging OVHC for parents or older relatives, these factors matter:
- Age-based premiums: OVHC gets more expensive as you age. A 65-year-old parent may pay 2-3x what a 25-year-old backpacker pays for the same tier.
- Pre-existing conditions: All OVHC policies have a 12-month waiting period for pre-existing conditions. If a parent has diabetes, hypertension, or a heart condition, those won't be covered for the first year.
- Comprehensive cover: Allianz Care's comprehensive tier offers the broadest pre-existing condition coverage once waiting periods are served. It's more expensive upfront but can save thousands if a hospital visit is needed.
RHCA and visitor visa holders
Visitors from RHCA countries (UK, Ireland, NZ, Italy, and others) can access Medicare for medically necessary treatment. This can reduce the level of OVHC you need — you might get by with budget-tier cover for ambulance and extras while relying on Medicare for hospital treatment. However, Medicare does not satisfy condition 8501 on its own, so you still need an OVHC policy.
