OVHC for Working Holiday Makers: 417 and 462 visa guide

Updated June 2026 · Visa guides

You've landed in Australia on a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) or Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462). You're probably budgeting carefully — rent, food, a van, maybe a surfboard. Health insurance might feel like an optional expense. It's not. Your visa demands it.

Condition 8501 applies to you

Both 417 and 462 visas carry condition 8501: you must maintain adequate health insurance from a registered Australian insurer for your entire stay. Your travel insurance from home — however comprehensive — doesn't count. Neither does your European Health Insurance Card, NHS coverage, or any other overseas plan. The Department of Home Affairs checks, and a breach can affect your current visa and any future Australian visa applications.

What cover do you actually need?

Working holiday makers tend to be young and healthy, but your job changes the risk profile. Here's what to consider:

  • Farm work / regional work: Higher injury risk. You want hospital cover plus physio for strains and sprains. Mid-tier is worth it.
  • Hospitality / retail: Lower physical risk. Budget tier satisfies the visa and covers you for accidents.
  • Construction / labouring: High risk. Don't skimp — mid or comprehensive tier with good hospital access.
  • Office / professional: Budget tier is fine if you're healthy and just need visa compliance.

Cost breakdown for backpackers

  • Budget (ahm, ~$75/month): Public hospital, ambulance. No extras. Cheapest way to satisfy condition 8501.
  • Mid (Bupa ~$88/month, nib ~$84/month): Adds GP, dental check-ups, optical. Worth the extra ~$10-15/month.
  • Comprehensive: Overkill for most backpackers unless you have a pre-existing condition.

RHCA countries and working holiday makers

If you're from the UK, Ireland, Canada, NZ, or another RHCA country, you can access Medicare for medically necessary treatment. But Medicare doesn't cover ambulance, dental, optical, or physio — and it doesn't satisfy condition 8501 on its own. Most RHCA backpackers still buy at least budget OVHC for compliance and extras.
