OVHC for 482 and 494 visa holders: skilled worker guide 2026
Skilled workers on the Temporary Skill Shortage visa (subclass 482) and the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa (subclass 494) face a different insurance landscape than students or backpackers. You're earning a full salary, often with a partner and children — and your employer may or may not cover your health insurance. Here's what you need to know.
Condition 8501 applies to both 482 and 494
Both visas carry condition 8501. You must hold OVHC from a registered Australian health insurer for your entire stay. Even one day without cover is a breach, and the Department of Home Affairs checks. Don't let your policy lapse between renewals.
Who pays — you or your employer?
This is the single most common point of confusion. Under the 482 visa framework, your employer must:
- Pay your OVHC premiums directly, or
- Reimburse you for the cost as part of your employment agreement
In practice, many 482 holders pay their own OVHC and the cost is considered part of the total salary package. The bottom line: your employer must ensure you have adequate cover, but the payment mechanism varies by employer. For 494 visa holders, employer-provided insurance is more common, especially in regional areas where employers compete for skilled workers.
What level of cover should you choose?
As a skilled worker, you have more options than someone on a tighter budget:
- Mid-tier (recommended): Private or shared hospital room, GP, dental and optical extras. Around $120–170/month for singles.
- Comprehensive: Private room, full extras including major dental and physio. $190–250/month. Worth it if you have ongoing health needs or a family.
- Couple/family cover: If your partner and/or children are on your visa, you need family OVHC. Budget $250–400/month depending on level and insurer.
Top picks for skilled workers
- Bupa Mid: Best hospital network — Bupa has direct agreements with most Australian private hospitals.
- Medibank Mid: Good extras for families and a solid claims app.
- Allianz Comprehensive: Best pre-existing condition cover among the five insurers.
Medicare and the 482/494
If you're from an RHCA country — UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and nine others — you can enroll in Medicare for medically necessary treatment. But note:
- Medicare does not cover ambulance, dental, optical, or physio.
- Medicare does not satisfy condition 8501 on its own.
- Most RHCA-eligible 482/494 holders still take out at least a budget OVHC policy for extras and ambulance cover.
