OVHC for bridging visas: what you need while waiting for a decision

June 11, 2026 · Visa guides

A bridging visa keeps you lawful in Australia while the Department processes your next visa application. But what happens to your health cover during the wait? The answer depends on which bridging visa you hold and what conditions carry over.

Do bridging visas require OVHC?

Most bridging visas inherit the conditions of your previous substantive visa. If your previous visa carried condition 8501 (which most temporary work and visitor visas do), your bridging visa also requires OVHC. The rule: continuous cover, no gaps.

Bridging visa types and OVHC

  • Bridging A (BVA): Applied for a new visa while holding a substantive visa · Yes, if your previous visa had 8501
  • Bridging B (BVB): BVA holder who needs to travel overseas · Same as BVA — maintain your OVHC
  • Bridging C (BVC): Applied for a visa while unlawful or on a previous bridging visa · Usually yes — check grant letter
  • Bridging E (BVE): Specific circumstances (removal, judicial review) · Check grant letter

The common scenario: 485 application bridging visa

The most common bridging visa situation for our readers: you finish your studies, your student visa is about to expire, and you’ve applied for a 485 Graduate visa. You get a Bridging A visa that kicks in when your 500 expires.

What to do: Buy OVHC that starts the day your 500 visa (and OSHC) expires. If your 485 is granted, you’re already covered. If processing takes months, you stay covered the entire time.

Maintaining continuous cover

The key danger on a bridging visa is letting your policy lapse. With processing times stretching to several months for some visa types, it’s easy to forget your policy expiry. Solutions:

  1. Buy 12 months upfront — many insurers offer small discounts for annual payment, and you won’t forget to renew
  2. Enable auto-renewal — all major insurers support this
  3. Set calendar reminders — 2 weeks and 1 week before expiry

What if my new visa is granted?

When your substantive visa is granted, your bridging visa ends. If the new visa requires OVHC (e.g., 482, 485, new 600 with 8501), keep your existing policy. If the new visa doesn’t require OVHC (unusual for temporary visas), you can cancel and request a refund for unused months.

FAQ

Can I use my previous OSHC during the bridging period? If your OSHC is still active and hasn’t expired, yes — it covers you until its end date. But buy OVHC to start the day OSHC expires.

What if I’m on a bridging visa for over a year? Buy a policy that covers the full expected processing time. Most insurers allow policies up to 24-36 months.

Does Medicare cover me on a bridging visa? Only if you’re from an RHCA country and have applied for a visa that leads to permanent residence. Most bridging visa holders are not eligible.
